Vogue was made in 1892 and is published by conde nast and is mainly aimed at young female from 17-19
case study 2: Malala yousafzai VOGUE
L.O: to explore the context and cover star for case study 2
vogue is aimed at abc1 fashion and style conscious women who are educated, sophisticated nd wealthy.
whilst it is traditionally targeted an older female audience of 30-45 year olds, you could say that this audience has now broadened to appeal to, inspire and empower younger readers too, as well as a much more culturally diverse audience, under the influence of the new editor.
to appeal to advertisers vogue emphasises the wealth and status.
vogue is. mainstream magazine so it uses the typical codes and conventions of print to construct the front cover. over a long time vogue has also acquired its own unique house style so that s brand identity is instantly recognisable conde nast would have deliberately adresses this when the appointed. Edward ennifful as editor i 2017 not only the first ,an to edit magazine but also the first black person since then vogue covers have celebrated diversity not through race and ethnicity but also age gender and size.
in april 2018 british vogue cover featured a. group of models of all colours ages and sizes and included the first model to wear a hijab as a symbol of her religion.
vogue is trying to show that you should emphasise yourself and what you want instead of following what other people are doing like they are trying to say to be unique and be yourself.
vogue is trying to show a progressive attitude towards males wearing feminine clothes
malala fact file:
- she was shit in the head by the taliban and survived
- this happened because she went to school
- malala is an international symbol standing up for the girls education in pakistan
- malala has now graduated from oxford university and has married a manager for pakistan
malala yousafzai became an international symbol of the fight for girls education after she was shot in 2012 for opposing taliban restrictions on female education in her home country of pakistan
Do Now 22/11/23
- her head scarf is representing her religion of a muslim
- the word survivor implies that she has been through a lot throughout her life and legend next to i shows how much of a role model and inspiration she is to her audience
- the colour red connotes passion and implies that she wants to overpower the taliban and seek freedom
vogue shows a range of diversity in their covers
her being a cover star implies that she is a powerful and important representation on the cover. it also has 2 other people of colour on the front page which is rare for a vogue cover.
i feel that females are being show as superior to males, this is very stereotypical in some ways like beauty love and romance this is because women have been represented as strong and powerful but malala is represented as a survivor. she looks very feminine - flowing, ilk headdress, jewellery, make up which makes her look classy and sophisticated: cover image and colour palette. malala is also showing her religion and ethnicity by wearing a head scarf which implies that she is muslim.

Malal Yousafzai VOGUE
L.O: to practise comparing representations in two covers
similarities:
both have feminine qualities like jewellery and makeup
differences:
the shot type is different kim has a longhsot which expresses her outfit and her body to objectify her whereas malala is a medium close u showing malala head scarf which represents her religion and the importance of her being a muslim
kim is being sexually objectified whereas malala is not this is because of mes on sen which is because kims outfit is very open and expressing her body and her body type where as malala is more covered up
kim is more about fashion and what she looks like whereas malala is what she is about and what she has achieved
the two magazine covers are significantly different this is because Malala is being represented about her achievements in her life in the vogue cover whereas Kim is being sexually objectified in the ELLE magazine this is because ELLE magazines focus more about fashion and looks.
however there is similarities this is shown in many different ways one of these is through a technique called mes-on-sen this is where you look deeper into the fashion side where you take closer details and look at there appearance through styler. the VOGUE cover for Malala you can see her jewellery and its almost like they have done it purpose because of the medium close up it symbolises her face and her jewellery this is also heavily focused on Kims ELLE cover it very stereotypically feminine because of things such as makeup and fashion this is all stereotypically shown towards females as you can see Kim is heavily confident i n her clothes which is showing a lot of skin and her body.
Linking back to the differences you can see by the shot types how both of these covers a significantly different to each other as you can see in the ELLE Kim cover it is focused on a medium longshot by doing this it creates an impact by showing the audience howKim is represented by expressing her outfit choice and including her whole body this creates an effect which sexually objectifies Kim. whereas Malala has a medium close up which focuses more on her religion and culture and how she's being represented as proud and elegant throughout what she has achieved in her life.
Another difference is if you take a closer look at the cover lines and how they are being represented you can see. how Malala is being represented as proud and a hero, this is shown in the cover line on Malalas cover talking about fighting talk this shows how she's been battling most of against thing like the taliban and fighting for women's education. This creates a really positive impact for the viewers and makes you realise how much of an influence she is towards her audience and the media. whereas you can see in Kims cover it says in bold and pink the word CONFIDENCE this word implies how she is being sexually objectified and is heavily focused on the stereotype of feminine fashion this is seen by her open clothes which expresses large amounts of her skin, even things like her having her buttons undone creates an impact of how they are trying to show of her body and her structure which is heavily juxtaposed on Malalas cover.
A final difference is how Malala is heavily focused on her religion and her background through her choice of clothing and her appearance, as you can see she is wearing a bright red headscarf which implies that she is part of the muslim religion and she is wearing it with a happy and proud face which creates a really positive impact towards her audience. The colour red shows her courage and her passion towards this. Whereas in the ELLE cover Kims name and the words confidence are both in bold pink which is still heavily stereotypical towards females and shows confidence and passion and shows how she is trying to show off her body and her looks towards the media.
Overall the gender representations are heavily different to each other, although there is similarities it significantly focuses on how these two covers are different to each other. But overall there are more differences throughout the magazine covers.

A great first attempt!
WWW: your judgement and reasoning is excellent and well explained.
EBI: You need to make sure you are using accurate terminology and supporting your ideas with specific examples from the cover. If you say the cover lines show something - then say what they say and how this represents gender.
